Professional Work & Education

Mike Jones was elected to his first term on the Windsor Heights City Council in 2018 and now serves as Mayor. He has been involved in politics since high school and is interested in political issues that affect us at the city, state, and national levels.

Mike was born in Des Moines and graduated from Johnston High School. After high school, he attended DMACC, earning his Associate of Arts. He attended the University of Iowa, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Political Science. Following that, he returned home to attend Drake University Law School, where he graduated with a juris doctor in 2011.

After passing the bar examination, Mike worked in private practice before joining the State Public Defender’s Office in 2012. Believing in protecting the rights of the indigent, he continues to work there as an attorney in the Des Moines Adult Office, representing clients in matters ranging from serious felonies to simple misdemeanors.

Priorities

As a City Councilor Mike successfully fought to raise the speed limit on University Avenue and eliminate the speed cameras, not only improving the quality of life for residents but also improving the image of the City. As Mayor, Mike continues to prioritize making Windsor Heights a positive and desirable place to live through dedicated infrastructure spending, increased amenities, improvements in Colby Park, and responsive government. These goals remain consistent and are met despite the fluid situation at the State Capitol and continuing changes in property tax laws.

Mike serves on several Regional Committees including:

  • Des Moines Metropolitan Advisory Council (MAC)
  • Des Moines Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO): Policy Committee, Executive Committee, Funding Subcommittee and Personnel Committee.
  • Polk County Emergency Management

Personal Life

Mike has lived in Windsor Heights since 2012 and is a die-hard Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. He is active in local political organizations and is interested in conservation, expanding his never-ending music collection, and social justice.

Term

Mayor Jones' term expires January 2026.
