Windsor Heights Selects Public Safety Director/Police Chief

Windsor Heights, Iowa (May 8, 2018) – The City of Windsor Heights has appointed Eric “Chad” McCluskey as the Public Safety Director/Police Chief, filling a position vacant since April 2016. McCluskey currently serves as Sergeant with the Augusta, Kansas Department of Public Safety, which is a combined police and fire department. During his time there, he has also been a volunteer firefighter, 9-1-1 dispatcher, civilian firefighter/EMT, Public Safety (both Police and Fire) officer/EMT, and canine Sergeant.

“He was selected by staff, metro police, and fire chiefs, a citizens committee and the City Council from a field of 96 candidates,” said Mayor Dave Burgess. “We’re pleased to have Chad join us.”

McCluskey was hired by a unanimous vote at the May 7th City Council meeting. Captain Derek Meyer has been serving as interim police chief since May 2016 when the previous public safety director/police chief accepted a position with the City of Johnston.

“McCluskey’s expertise and more than thirty years of experience in the public safety field and fire service will serve us well,” said Burgess. “He will cultivate a strong team including retaining staff with effective training and professional development.”

McCluskey holds an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science, a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) with an emphasis on Human Resource Management from Webster University.  McCluskey is an instructor of Criminal Justice and Fire Science classes for three Kansas Community Colleges. He teaches Kansas law enforcement officers various topics including search and seizure, strategic planning, budgeting, legal updates/case law, and canine law.  In addition, Chad serves on the Board of Directors for a Kansas Credit Union and the Master Trainer for the Kansas Police Dog Association where he manages over forty police canine teams from across the State of Kansas.

McCluskey is excited to join the Windsor Heights team and to begin building relationships and partnerships with those in the area. “I am humbled and honored to have been selected to join the great team of Windsor Heights public safety professionals who provide police, fire, and emergency medical services to the residents of Windsor Heights.” Said Chad McCluskey.
