Mission

The mission of the Windsor Heights Fire Department is to improve the quality of life and safety of our citizens by providing the highest level of services through, Fire Prevention, Community Risk Reduction, Emergency Response, and Training.

Responsibilities

This service area is responsible for the following items:

  • Developing standard operating procedures compliant with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards as well as Iowa standards in order to provide the safest environment possible for our employees and volunteers and to provide the best service possible to our citizens
  • Overseeing overall operation of the department
  • Preparing and administering the department's budget

Interested in a career in Fire and EMS?  The Windsor Heights Fire Department participates with other Des Moines Metro Fire Departments in the Central Iowa Fire & EMS Testing Consortium.

The Central Iowa Fire and EMS Testing Consortium is a group of metro Fire Departments with a mission to provide entry-level written and physical ability examinations for aspiring candidates. 

In cooperation with Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) and the DMACC Fire Science Program, this consortium allows an efficient and effective method for candidates to become eligible for hire in the group of metro Fire Departments. 

Meeting the requirements of the consortium and upon completion of the written and physical ability exams, candidates are able to apply for employment opportunities within the group.   Learn more about the Central Iowa Fire and EMS Testing Consortium by clicking here.

Paid-Per-Call Firefighters / EMTs / Paramedics

Our unique paid-per-call program allows you to start your career with the Windsor Heights Fire Department and get real life experience, networking, and training!  Our Paid-Per-Call team do everything our fulltime team does, but with the added bonus of FLEXIBILE SCHEDULING and picking up shifts that work for YOUR SCHEDULE!

Our paid-per-call team cover primarily nights (6pm to 6am) to supplement our fulltime team, however additional opportunities are often available as well.  

The Paid-Per-Call program is perfect for those completing their certifications and schooling who want some real life, work experience.  This program also allows you to network with metro fire departments and their personnel to give you critical contacts and experience when working towards a career in the Fire/EMS career field.
