Saving Lives in Windsor Heights

9-7-21 saving lives

The City of Windsor Heights is grateful for the men and women in our police and fire departments! On September 7th, we had the honor of recognizing their life-saving achievements at the City Council meeting.

On May 4, 2021, Windsor Heights Police and Fire personnel responded to an unconscious patient call. When officers arrived, they found a male subject who was not breathing and had no pulse.

Officers Davison, Clingan, and Miller immediately rendered CPR to the victim and connected an automatic external defibrillator (AED). Officers performed life-saving resuscitation until their partners with the Windsor Heights Fire Department (WHFD) arrived and took over patient care.

Once WHFD personnel arrived on the scene, Paramedic/Firefighter Foreman and Paramedic/Firefighter Jones took over patient care. Paramedic/Firefighter Dumermuth was off-duty and happened to be in the area, so he responded to assist as well.

As a result of the efforts of both the WHPD officers and the WHFD team, the victim ultimately recovered and was released from the hospital. He and his family were able to personally thank everyone at the City Council meeting.

On Friday, December 11, 2020, EMT/Firefighter Johnson along with Paramedic/Firefighter Jones and Paramedic/Firefighter Dietch responded to a difficulty breathing call at a local business. When crews arrived, they found a male who had attempted to take his own life. The male had severe lacerations and a blood pressure of only 64/42. The patient was stabilized and quickly transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The patient was ultimately released from the hospital, undoubtedly due to the professional care he received, in part, from our team.

Chief Chad McCluskey said, "One of the best accomplishments a first responder can encounter in their career is the saving of another human life. I take great pride in awarding life-saving awards to our team who cared for the patient in such a dedicated and professional manner." McCluskey also said he regularly reminds the WHPD and WHFD team they never know the impact they make on others' lives.
