The performance of a K-9 unit within a police department is well documented as a highly effective tool that not only raises awareness on the community level about the dedication of the police department, but also deters criminal behavior, addresses narcotics crimes, aids in locating lost individuals, has the potential to be self-sufficient through asset forfeitures, and creates a forum for public education and crime prevention efforts.
A well trained K-9 unit can add an unparalleled search tool to any police department, while limiting the costs of overtime and freeing up patrol units to field other calls for service. The deterrent effect alone of this unit can be a money saving aspect that justifies the expenditure. As the community around us is changing the Police Department needs to make changes to maintain the high levels of safety, security, and education the public has come to expect. Our K9 unit can help to accomplish those goals and can be used for years to come in an effort to maintain the type of lifestyle that our residents, businesses and visitors have come to enjoy.
The Windsor Heights Police Department would like to express their gratitude for the support that has been received during the 2016 / 2017 K-9 fundraiser. Welcome K-9 Baiyco to the Windsor Heights Police Department.
Officer Palmer and K9 Baiyco have been serving the community since February of 2017. This team began their five week basic training course in February and exceeds over 15 hours of additional training a month. Officer Palmer and K9 Baiyco completed their first team certification in March of 2017.
Philanthropy and partnership with local businesses to supply maintenance costs/materials through donation is typical for a canine team. The goal of the Windsor Heights Police Department was to cover all costs associated with the initial introduction of the unit through donations and sponsorships. The community generously supported the initial costs of K9 Baiyco for 2017.
