Project Overview

The street is being reconstructed, minor sanitary sewer work is being done, storm sewers and storm sewer intakes are being added, and portions of the water main are being replaced. The project will begin in April or May and should be finished by the end of November.

Stage 1 (75th Street to Plaza Circle):  For the week of September 28th, the Contractor will install mailboxes and begin preparing for seed and then seed.  The tops of the intakes at 76th Street will be installed along with pouring concrete around them.

Stage 2 (73rd Street to 75th Street):  For the week of September 28th, the Contractor will begin grading the roadway and installing rock.  It’s anticipated that street paving will occur the week of October 5th.  Sidewalk and driveway grading will follow street paving.  All work is weather dependent.  Please remember to place garbage, recycling, and yard waste out at the end of your driveway by 5 PM Thursday for the Contractor to pick up.  Pickup times are different for each item, so they may not be returned at the same time.  Temporary mailboxes will be used until the street is open to traffic.

Stage 3 (Plaza Circle to 78th Street):  For the week of September 28th, the Contractor will finish sub drain installation and then begin grading the roadway at the end of the week.  Rock installation will occur the week of October 5th along with street paving the end of the week.  All work is weather dependent.  Please remember to place garbage, recycling and yard waste out at the end of your driveway by 5 PM Thursday for the Contractor to pick up.  Pickup times are different for each item, so they may not be returned at the same time.  Temporary mailboxes will be used until the street is open to traffic.

Some of the work may be delayed due to wet conditions from the last week of rain.

Stage 4: on September 8th, the City council approved Resolution No 2020-110 which allows the contractor and engineer to set a reasonable stopping date for the project in the fall of 2020. Due to significant delays from utility companies, poor soil conditions near the creek, and whether the project will not be completed in the fall of 2020 as originally planned. The contractor may not stage 4 this fall, depending on how weather and site conditions are looking as we get closer to finishing stages 2 and 3. If they are able to finish stage 4 of the project before the winter sets in, they will do so. The work that is not finished on this project in the fall of 2020 will be finished in the spring of 2021. Stage 2 (73rd Street to 75th Street):  For the week of August 31st, the contractor will be working on water services from the water main to the stop box and sanitary sewer main repairs.  In order to connect new water services, your water will be off.  It’s anticipated that the water will be off for a short period of time.  Please remember to place garbage, recycling and yard waste out at the end of your driveway by 5 PM Thursday for the contractor to pick up.  Pickup times are different for each item, so they may not be returned at the same time.  Temporary mailboxes will be used until the street is open to traffic.

For the week of August 24th, the Contractor will be will be pouring the 76th Street intersection, west bridge approach, and half of the Plaza Circle intersection. They will be pouring driveways and sidewalks during the early part of the week. It is anticipated that residents may start using their driveways the week of August 24th. Restoration work will follow driveway and sidewalk installation. All work is weather dependent. Please remember to place garbage, recycling and yard waste at the end of your driveway by 5 PM Thursday for the contractor to pick up. Pickup times are different for each item, so they may not be returned at the same time.

If residents have any tree debris from the storm, place it near the edge of the roadway in the grass and it will be picked up.  The debris removal contractor has been down College Drive once already but will make another pass in the next couple weeks. We will make sure that residents with storm debris are taken care of, especially those on streets under construction.

Stage 2 will begin the week of August 24th. Once removal of pavement has occurred, they will begin storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water main work. The Contractor has put out door hangers to affected residents. As a reminder, please remove any items located within the street right-of-way (10-12 feet from back of curb) that you want salvaged.

Stage 3 is anticipated to start the week of August 31st. Affected residents will receive notification from the Contractor approximately one week prior to construction. 8/14/20 Update

For the week of 17th, the Contractor will finish main line paving west of the bridge and finish side streets and by bridge.  East of the bridge will be paved first.  Grading for driveways and sidewalk is scheduled for the end of the week of the 17th.  Pouring of driveways and sidewalk is anticipated to begin the week of August 24th.  It’s anticipated that residents may start using their driveways the week of August 24th.  Sidewalk installation will follow driveway installation.  All work is weather dependent.  Please remember to place garbage, recycling and yard waste out at the end of your driveway by 5 PM Thursday for the contractor to pick up.  Pickup times are different for each item, so they may not be returned at the same time.

For the week of June 29th, the Contractor will finish installing storm sewer on Phase 1 west of the bridge and continue storm sewer installation on the east side of the bridge. Water services will also be installed that week. It is anticipated that roadway construction will start the week of July 9th on the east side of the bridge. All work is weather dependent. There may be a disruption in water service during storm sewer installation. Affected residents will be notified by Des Moines Water Works. During the week of April 20th, the Contractor will continue removing pavement on Phase 1. Almost all the pavement has been removed west of the bridge, then will begin east of the bridge. They will begin work on the storm sewer west of the bridge in the middle of the week. All work is weather dependent. Please remember to place garbage, recycling and yard waste out at the end of your driveway by 5 PM Thursday for the contractor to pick up. Pickup times are different for each item, so they may not be returned at the same time. Temporary mailboxes will be used until the street is open to traffic. Another reminder, please remove any items located within the street right-of-way (10-12 feet from the back of curb) that you want to be salvaged. The Contractor will not be salvaging any items.

Please remove vehicles from driveway by the time given in the notice from Contractor. Please remember to place garbage, recycling and yard waste out at the end of your driveway by 5 PM Thursday for the contractor to pick up. Pickup times are different for each item, so they may not be returned at the same time. Temporary mailboxes will be used moving forward.
