University Ave Construction

Project Overview

The project is expected to begin in April or May. The majority of the work is expected to be completed in 2020, but some work will have to be done in 2021. The project is a complete reconstruction of University Avenue from 73rd Street to 70th Street and an overlay from 63rd Street to 70th Street. A shared-use pedestrian and bicycle trail will be added to the south side of the road. Rain gardens will be added along the length of the corridor. There will also be streetscape improvements, wayfinding signs, trees, and DART stops installed as a part of this project.

7/2/20 Update

During the week of July 6th, the Contractor will continue storm sewer installation and begin grading the roadway for pavement. Road grading is anticipated to take approximately two weeks. The entrance to Hy-Vee will remain open for the majority of the time. It will be closed later in the phase to allow for concrete to be poured. Phase 1A will remain closed. 6/26/20 Update

During the week of June 29th, CenturyLink is scheduled to complete the relocation of their infrastructure. Once all conflicts have been resolved, roadway construction will begin (anticipated to be the week of June 29th). The entrance to Hy-Vee will remain open for the majority of the time. It will be closed later in the phase to allow for concrete to be poured. Phase 1A will remain closed. All work is weather dependent. All businesses are open. 6/19/20 Update

During the week of June 22nd, CenturyLink is scheduled to complete the relocation of their infrastructure. During the week of June 15th, the Contractor will continue removing pavement and roadway preparation on Phase 1B. The project is currently being slowed down by conflicts with CenturyLink that are being worked through now. The entrance to Hy-Vee will remain open for the majority of the time. It will be closed later in the phase to allow for concrete to be poured. Phase 1A will remain closed. All work is weather dependent. 6/5/20 Update

During the week of June 8th, the Contractor will continue removing pavement and roadway preparation on Phase 1B. Work on the traffic signals and roadway lighting will also begin. The entrance to Hy-Vee will remain open for the majority of the time. It will be closed later in the phase to allow for concrete to be poured. Phase 1A will remain closed. 5/29/20 Update

During the week of June 1st, the Contractor will pour sidewalk on Phase 1A along with restoration and lighting work. They will be removing pavement on Phase 1B. The entrance to Hy-Vee will remain open for the majority of the time. It will be closed later in the phase to allow for concrete to be poured. Phase 1A will remain closed. 5/22/20 Update

During the week of May 25th, the Contractor will finish pouring concrete on Phase 1A along with sidewalk installation and restoration. They will begin removing pavement on Phase 1B starting middle of the week. Phase 1B has been extended farther east (to need just west of 70th Street). The entrance to Hy-Vee will remain open for the majority of the time. It will be closed later in the phase to allow for concrete to be poured. 5/15/20 Update

During the week of May 18th, the Contractor will finish pouring concrete on Phase 1A along with sidewalk installation and restoration. All work is weather dependent. 5/8/20 Update

During the week of May 11th, the Contractor will begin street paving operations on Phase 1A, along with work on new street lighting and traffic signal work. All work is weather dependent. 5/1/20 Update

During the week of May 4th, the Contractor will begin street paving preparation with paving to follow on Phase 1A, along with work on new street lighting and traffic signal work. 4/24/20 Update

During the week of April 27th, the Contractor will continue placing gravel and prepping for concrete on Phase 1A along with utility work. All work is weather dependent. For everyone’s safety, monitor traffic control changes and no texting while driving. Trucks will be entering and exiting the site, so do NOT follow these trucks into the construction site and stay a safe distance behind them.

4/17/20 Update

During the week of April 20th, the Contractor will continue removing pavement on Phase 1A. Once the pavement is removed the contractor will begin preparing for pavement which includes grading and placing rock. All work is weather dependent. For everyone’s safety, monitor traffic control changes and don’t text while driving.

4/10/20 Update

Demolition on the first Phase of the University Avenue project has been delayed a week. Beginning the week of April 13th, the contractor will saw cut existing pavement and begin removals. There will be minor pipe work, sub grade work, and sub base work. Expect traffic disruptions near the intersection of 73rd St and University Ave during this portion of construction.
